What's the deal with Performance Royalties?

Even if your music is on Spotify, Pandora, Google Play, etc...An actual Human has to submit your shows and setlists to your PRO in order to get Performance Royalties.

The songs DO NOT need to be recorded or released yet.

If you play original music at bars, restaurants, and other venues then you are allowed to submit your set-lists to a PRO (Performing Rights Organization) to claim royalties for performing your songs. These are the same organizations who track your Digital Royalties - song plays on the internet, television, and radio.

The PRO pays depending on how long you performed and on the size of venue. The money comes from the yearly fee that all venues must pay to have live music, karaoke, or even jukeboxes.

Venues pay the same whether you claim your sets or not, and venues are not made aware of which bands claim royalties or not.

There are 5 PROs in the United States: BMI, ASCAP, Alltrack, Global Music Rights, and SESAC. Other countries have their own companies.

The payouts vary and there are pros and cons for each. ASCAP is now free, and BMI cost $75 to join. Alltrack is free, but new and small with bad customer service. The other PROs can only be joined by invitation.

Stop leaving money on the table. Learn to claim them for yourselves, or use someone like me to do them for you. Feel free to hit me up, or just take this info and run with it. Cheers!
